Taking Your Dog To An Emergency Veterinarian

Knowing when to take your dog to the vet is a very important part of being a dog owner. You will for sure need to take them to get their different shots, but you will need to know when your dog is having a medical emergency as well. Dogs are ver resilient and can take a lot of pain, so they may not even let you know that they are hurting. It is therefore very important that you are able to recognize the signs of a medical emergency for your dog. Here are just a few things to look for.

Bloat

One of the most dangerous conditions that a dog can go through is what is called bloat. This occurs when the dog swallows something that gets caught in their intestines, or if their intestines get clogged up. This is a life threatening situation for a dog and the symptoms can be hard to recognize. Most dogs are going to act restless. They are not going to be able to get comfortable. You may also see that your dog is trying to vomit but failing. If your dog has any of these symptoms then it may be time to take them into the vet to be checked for bloat.

Trauma

If your dog experiences any type of trauma while you are around, do not hesitate to take the dog into the vet. Trauma can include getting hit by a car or a bike, a dog fight, or even falling from some hight. If you see any of this make sure you take your dog to see the vet as soon as possible. If your dog is acting lethargic and slow, or you can see that the dog has physically hurt a leg, then they may have experienced trauma and need medical attention immediately, such as at Kenmore Veterinary Hospital.

Change In Eating Habits

Something that you are going to need to watch closely are the eating habits of your dog. If your dog immediately eats every time you feed him or her, but for some reason one day just decides it does not want to eat, you need to keep a close eye on your dog. If your dog skips another meal, then you need to take your dog in as soon as possible. Once again it is going to be important for you to monitor your dog because you are the one that knows the habits, but a dog skipping meals or not drinking can mean a variety of medical issues could be going on.

About Me

Older Animals Need Extra Special Care

I have always been an animal-lover, and while my family had cats when I was growing up, after I graduated from college and had my own place, I adopted my first dog. I did a lot of research on dog care before adopting him to help make sure I care for him properly and continue to research pet health tips to this day. Now that he has reached his "golden years," I realize that is is more important than ever to monitor his health. I take him to the veterinarian every year for a wellness check-up and give him a couple of health supplements. I am proud to say that he is in amazing health for his age! I want to help others learn how to care for their pets well, especially senior dogs and cats, so I decided to start a blog to share my pet care tips on!
